As part of my new Planned For You series, here is an example travel plan including prices, accommodation and a base itinerary.
City Break to Milan
Milan is a city in Northern Italy, offering a a mix of fashion, art and history. Milan can be perfect for a weekend trip, an extended city break or incorporated into an interrailing adventure. Depending on preferences and budget, there is always a variety of options and choices when travelling which will decide on the overall cost of the trip.
Flights
My absolute go to for finding flights is ALWAYS Skyscanner, they are an easy to use site, where you are able to compare flight prices, times and airlines so that you can choose the flights that best suit you. I will provide an example flight with dates, times and luggage choices that are cost-effective and ideal so that at the end of the blog the result is an example trip with a full itinerary and the cost.
Flights Saturday 19th September 2026 13:15 to Wednesday 23rd September 2026 18:50. This is with the airline Wizz Air.

Milan Malpensa (MXP) to London Luton (LTN) 18:50 – 19:55 (2hr5min Flight)
Total – £75 for under seat luggage, plus 10kg trolley bag on board. This baggage choice is perfect for a four night trip, not too much and not too little.
Accommodation
A cheap option for only £37.06 per night, is YellowSquare Milan Hostel. This includes one bed in a 6 bed mixed dorm and included air conditioning, a private ensuite for your room and a locker (so don’t forget your padlock!!). This can be a perfect option for solo travellers as it also provides social events and gives you the opportunity to meet new people. For the four nights this totals to £148.24.
Itinerary
Day 1: Land in Milan
- Land at 18:15 and take the Malpensa Bus Express from the airport to Milan Central Station for around 5 euros per person one way. There are many bus/shuttle options as well as the train with trip time ranging from 40 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes and price options ranging from 5 euros to 15 euros one way for one person. You can purchase tickets at the airport or online. A more expensive option would be taking a taxi straight to your accommodation especially if travelling solo.
- Spend the rest of the evening, settling in to you accommodation, having something to eat and getting enough sleep ready for your first full day.
Day 2: Explore Milan Centre
- Explore the city centre, grab a coffee and take an early stroll. Visit the Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) located in Piazza del Duomo. It is one of the largest churches in the world and is renowned for its gothic architecture, marble façade, stained glass windows and multitude of statues. You can admire the beauty of its exterior for free, however if you wish to enter the Cathedral, visit the museum or access the rooftop you will have to purchase a ticket. Visit the official Duomo di Milano to find out ticket plans and prices and choose your option.
- Another key attraction in Milan is Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a 19th century shopping arcade home to some luxurious boutiques. There is a beautiful glass dome and mosaics representing the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. This is completely free to walk through and is located between Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Scala.
- Take a trip to Navigli, a historic system of interconnected canals in Milan. Navigli has lots of vintage markets, however most people recommend visiting here on a afternoon or evening as there are lots of cafes or bars for a quick relaxed drink.
Day 3: Day Trip to Lake Como
- Trains go from Milano Bovisa Politecnico, Milan Porta Garibaldi or Milan Centrale to Como San Giovanni, Como Borghi or Como Lago.
- Heading into Como San Giovanni is the most ideal and main station for wanting to explore Como city as it is about a ten minute walk to the city centre, with Como Lago station be located more near the water-front and closer to the ferry terminal. Como Borghi is located more out of the way so I would opt for one of the other two options.
- Trains can be booked in advance on omio for £5 each way, therefore totalling £10 for travel.
- Spend the day exploring the picturesque towns, grab a drink and a bite to eat or even indulge in a boat tour to enjoy the scenery and view the beautiful shoreline.
- Apart from Como, some beautiful towns along Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio which can often be more popular than Como itself.
Day 4: Another Day In The City
- Head to Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) and Sempione Park. The courtyards of the Castle are open from 7am to 7:30pm and are free to visit every day. A single ticket of 10 Euros gives you access to all the castle museums.
- Do not miss the Arco della Pace which is just the other side of the park. Also known as the Arch of Peace, this triumphal arch is located in Piazza Sempione.
- Explore the Brera District, maybe choose to have lunch or dinner here. Brera seems to be a top favourite among many tourists as it has a beautiful clean and relaxed vibe with gorgeous streets to stroll.
Day 5: Home Time
- Take the morning to repack and check out of your accommodation. As you probably only have little luggage, it should be fairly easily to transport your luggage around the city. Choose a spot to sunbathe in the parks or chill out and have lunch in cute nearby café.
- Choose between the same options that you had leaving the airport to go back to Malpensa. Those top options being the buses or shuttles which only cost around 5 Euros, however keep in mind that this journey is about an hour and can vary with traffic so allow enough time to reach the airport in case it is super busy!
Total Estimate Cost on Budget: £265
So including food, on a budget you could do a decent trip to Milan in September for around £300. There are obviously lots of alternatives, for example flying on different days, staying in a hotel compared to a hostel or eating out for every meal and ordering lots of alcoholic beverages. These can all change the price of a trip and make it more expensive, the budget cost includes flights, transport to and from airport and Milan Centre, accommodation, transport to and from Lake Como and entry to Duomo and Sforza Castle. Any additional activities, tickets or ferry costs (for example in Como) will bump up the budget.
